Sadly, for these two gentle creature life was nothing but tough. For more than 20 years, Shirley and Jenny were forced to perform tricks for entertainment as part of circuses. But even though they stayed separated for so long, they recognized each other, and after all they been through the two elephants still found the power to fully enjoy their reunion.

The beautiful moment unfolded at the Elephant Sanctuary – a “safe heaven” for rescue elephants in Tennessee. Shirley and Jenny have been taken here, after a rescue that took some huge efforts. A worthy mission as the two got the chance to be free once again, and most important to be reunited!

‘An elephant never forgets,’ and Shirley and Jenny prove that. Jenny was just a few months old cub when she was taken to the circus. It was where she met Shirley, who later became her friend, her protector and her mom. Unfortunately, they were separated along the way, but they proved strong enough to make it through, and then after 25 years they met again.

There wasn’t a dry eye in the room, when Jenny and Shirley reunited!

“After several minutes of touching and exploring each other, Shirley started to roar and I mean roar, and Jenny joined in immediately,” said Carol Buckley – executive director at the sanctuary. “The interaction was dramatic, to say the least, with both elephants trying to climb in with each other and frantically touching each other through the bars. I have never experienced anything even close to this depth of emotion.”
