A metropolis in eastern China, known for its important Christian community, forbade schools to celebrate Christmas, a tradition considered too “Western”. In addition, a university forbade any festivity, forcing students to watch propaganda films.
Local authorities said they want to encourage all schools to pay more attention to traditional Chinese holidays such as the winter solstice, instead of focusing on trivial Western holidays such as Christmas. These prohibitions are inconsistent with the Christmas symbols displayed by Chinese shopping centers, where garlands, trees and Santas are omnipresent.
