When you’re getting ready to go on vacation, you probably spend more time planning for the actual trip than worrying about what will happen when you get home. But if you want to avoid a lot of problems that might actually put your health at risk, then you should take the time to put some practical tips into action.
Now, most of know food poisoning is nothing to joke about. However, many of us lose track of how fresh the food we keep in the freezer actually is after getting back from a longer vacation.
If the power goes down while you are away, meats can defrost and go bad. To make sure you are not going to eat any spoiled food once you get back from vacation, put a coin in your freezer before you go.
Fill a cup with water and put it in the freezer. Once the water freezes, place a coin on the top and put it back in the freezer. If you see the coin at the bottom of the cup when you get back, it means the power went off long enough for the food to melt and re-freeze. In this case, it’s best to throw away any sensitive food items.
